He had stood 11th and fifth on the merit lists of his board for the SSC and HSC examinations, and then got admitted to Buet's Mechanical Engineering department.

And lately, the brilliant student, Moshiur Rahman Siam, had been dreaming about going abroad for study.

This dream, however, would never be fulfilled now.

Siam and his friend Saeed Latif, also a first-year student at the same department, drowned while taking bath in a water body at Bichanakandi tourist spot in Sylhet's Gowainghat upazila on Thursday.

“He [Siam] was looking for a scholarship to study abroad. I told him it would cost much and I need some time to save money for that,” said his father Mahbubur Rahman Alo, who runs a grocery shop in Shaheb Bazar area of Rajshahi city.

Siam once told Mahbub, “Baba [Dad], don't worry, all our sorrows would be gone once I get a job after my studies.”

“Siam last called me over phone from Bichanakandi on Thursday but I could not hear him properly due to network problem. He told me that he would call me once he came under proper mobile network coverage. But he has now gone out of network for ever,” said the father, sobbing uncontrollably.

“I have lost my diamond,” he said.

This correspondent visited Siam's house in the city's Sheikhpara area and saw neighbours thronging there to console his family members.

Siam's mother was fainting repeatedly and was not able to say anything. His younger brother, who studies at class IX at a local school, was crying.

Siam's body was taken to Rajshahi around 3.30pm yesterday. Later, he was buried at a graveyard in Hetomkhan area.

Parents of Saeed Latif, the other victim, live in Rajshahi but they could not be reached as they had already left for their village home in Gaibandha for their son's burial.
