Bangladeshis indebted to Shafiqual Haque for his contributions, says Nobel Laureate Dr Yunus

Nobel Peace Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus has condoled the demise of Md Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, founder of Association for Social Advancement (ASA), a leading microfinance institution.
Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, also an advisor to the former caretaker government, passed away in the early hours today at the capital's Square Hospital following a massive cardiac arrest. He was 72.
In his condolence message, Dr Yunus said well-wishers and patrons in the country and across the world are shocked at the sudden demise of Shafiqual Haque Choudhury.
Recollecting the ASA founder's immense contribution in lifting people out of poverty through microcredit, Dr Yunus said.
"He entered the microcredit sector rather abruptly, without having any relevant institutional or academic preparation. Yet, he never considered this as a barrier. He was resolute in his decision and worked relentlessly to meet his aspirations. His limitless courage was his true strength."
"Although he began in this sector late, he made his institution to become one of the top two microfinancing entities in the country within a short time by merit of his courage, leadership, and managerial skills," the Nobel Peace laureate said.
"Besides leading ASA's vast operation in the country, Shafiqual Haque Choudhury also expanded the services to many other countries. He collaborated with various international organisations to help microcredit reach different countries. He encouraged a host of academics, donor organisations, and leaders of international organisations, who were not interested in microcredit, to join him and believe in this sector,"
"I remember his immense contributions alongside a vast population around the world who are being benefitted by the activities of his institution, the employees led by him to spread ASA's services globally, and his friends and well-wishers mesmerised by his qualities. I also express my condolences to his bereaved family, and pray for eternal peace and salvation of his departed soul," Dr Yunus also said.
"The people of the country will be forever indebted to Shafiqual Haque Choudhury for his contributions," he added.
