Twenty-one days after the authorities claimed that none of its students took part in March 26 vandalism and arson, Al Jamia Al Islamia Al Yunusiya Madrasa expelled 20 students for allegedly taking part in the mayhem in Brahmanbaria.

The madrasa, locally called "Boro Madrasa", took the action amid the ongoing drives being conducted by the law enforcers to arrest those involved with the incident, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent.

The expulsion was announced through a notice signed by the madrasa's Education Secretary Mufti Shamsul Haque Saraili yesterday afternoon.

The notice mentioned that the students were expelled on allegations of attacking and damaging government property on March 26 and for violating all the rules and regulations of the madrasa under Section 25 of the admission conditions.

The expelled students are -- Ashik-e-Elahi, Abu Hanif, Misbah Uddin, Ashraful Islam, Alauddin, Maqbool Hossain, Rafiqul Islam, Mubarak Ullah, Borhan Uddin, Abdullah Afzal, Jubayer Ahmed, Hizbullah Rahmani, Shibbir Ahmed, Jubayer, Iftekhar Adnan, Solaiman, Rakib Billah, Tarik Jamil and Habibullah.

All of them are final-year students of Daura-e-Hadith department of the madrasa in the academic year 2020-2021.

On April 5, after visiting Brahmanbaria Press Club, Sajedur Rahman, the teacher of the madrasa and Hefajat-e-Islam's district unit president, claimed that no one from the organisation were involved in the violence.

A day before the notice was issued, police arrested Mufti Maulana Zakaria Khan, a teacher at the madrasa and also Hefajat-e-Islam district unit's assistant publicity affairs secretary, in connection with the violence carried out on March 26 to 28.

During primary interrogation, Zakaria confessed that as per the direction of the central Hefajat leaders, the massive violence was carried out on March 26, 27 and 28 to oust the ruling government.

During the violence, teachers and students of different madrasas vandalised and set various government and non-government establishments and houses on fire.
