BWDB & CIL singed a contract for the conservation of the banks of Jamuna River

An agreement has been signed to implement a project to save part of the banks of the Jamuna River from erosion. This agreement was signed on Sunday evening, October 30, 2022, between Confidence Infrastructure Limited (CIL) and China's Hong Xiang New Geo-Material Co. Ltd (JV) and Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) at Pani Bhaban, Green Road, Panthapath.
In the presence of Mr Fazlur Rashid, Director General of Water Development Board, the relevant Project Director Ruhul Amin and CIL Managing Director Salman Karim signed the agreement. At this time, Additional Director General (Planning) of Water Development Board Mr Zia Uddin Begh, Additional Director General (East) Mr. Mahbubur Rahman, Additional Director General (Western Region) Mr. Mohammad Mizanur Rahman and senior officials of the Water Development Board and contractors were present.
According to the contract, a part of Tangail district on the left bank of the river upstream of Chauhali Upazila of Sirajganj will be preserved using Geo textile bags. A total number of 50 lakh 38 thousand 476 Geo textile bags are required to be used for the completion of the project. It has also been noted that previously not a single project within the country had ever supplied or used such large quantity of Geo textile bags.
With the financial support from Asian Development Bank (ADB), the total cost of this project is estimated at 14,006,963.28 USD and BDT 32,47,80,186.40. According to the contract, the project work is expected to be completed by November of next year.
Confidence Infrastructure Limited has set up a Geo Bag manufacturing plant at Narayanganj. On a monthly basis, the factory has a production capacity of producing more than 10 lakh pieces of bags. Apart from this project there will be no problem in the supply of Geo Bags in sufficient numbers for the future projects of Water Development Board.
Due to the erosion of Jamuna River lot of livelihoods are being affected every year as the houses get damaged, disrupts the agriculture. The area for which the present project has been taken up is highly erosion prone. Through the successful implementation of this project, it will be possible to preserve the river banks of that area effectively in the long run.
