NSU launches ‘Media and Journalism’ programme

North South University (NSU) has launched a new programme, "Media and Journalism", under the Department of Political Science and Sociology, with a view to increase the skilled workforce in the world of mass communication and journalism.
On the occasion, a roundtable discussion was held in the syndicate building of the university on August 6, said a press release.
Hasibur Rahman, executive director, Management and Resources Development Initiative (MRDI); Syed Ishtiaq Reza, CEO and editor-in-chief, Global Television; Ashraf Kaiser, CEO of Benchmark PR; Anisul Hoque, associate editor of the Prothom Alo; Syed Gousul Alam Shaon, managing partner and country head, Grey Advertising Bangladesh Ltd; Tushar Abdullah, CEO, Ekhon TV; Dr Gitiara Nasreen, professor, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Dhaka University; Abdun Noor Tushar, CEO, Gati Media Ltd; Khairul Basher, head of communications, Grameenphone Ltd; Syed Ashfaqul Haque, executive editor, The Daily Star, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
Prof Gitiara Nasreen said at present media research in Bangladesh is not progressing properly. A large budget is required for it, she added.
Prof Sk Tawfique M Haque, chair and director, SIPG, NSU, presented details about the programme's curriculum.
Emphasising freedom of expression, Anisul Hoque said like other countries around world we have some limitations.
Khairul Basher stressed the need for acquiring skills in traditional media as well as new topics in the changing knowledge of media.
Syed Ashfaqul Haque said a journalist is not only produced in the classroom; there is a difference between theory and its practical application. In order to develop competent journalists, they need to be equipped with practical knowledge and adaptability to changing technologies.
In his speech, Abdun Noor Tushar said journalism students should have strong knowledge of both Bangla and English languages.
Asif Bin Ali, lecturer, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, NSU, moderated the programme chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Atiqul Islam.
