Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and its dwellers together have set an example by cleaning the waste and blood of the sacrificed animals within 10 hours on the Eid day.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and its dwellers together have set an example by cleaning the waste and blood of the sacrificed animals within 10 hours on the Eid day.

When the capital city of Dhaka witnessed river of blood and complaints of sacrificed animals' waste were reported from other cities, Rajshahi city got clean within 10 hours, said Nizam-ul Azim, acting mayor of RCC.

In areas like Seroil, where animals were sacrificed on streets rather than on spots selected by RCC, dwellers washed and cleaned the places themselves and the rest was done by the corporation's labourers.

The corporation began its drive at 4:00pm with a total of 1,400 labourers. They collected waste from houses and gathered it to a pre-selected secondary place at every ward till 7:00pm. The waste was then carried to final destination at Vagar till 2:00am.

The corporation used 16 hydraulic drum trucks to suck waste and dump at the Vagar while three water tankers to wash the streets and other spots, said the acting mayor, adding that finally the rainfall was a blessing.

Over 45,000 animals were sacrificed in all 30 wards of Rajshahi city generating 1,600 tonnes of waste and the corporation spent nearly Tk 17 lakh for the cleaning drive, he added.
