Six cases have been filed against 2,925 people last night in connection with clashes between law enforcers and Hefajat-e-Islam activists in Narayanganj during Sunday’s countrywide hartal enforced by the Islamist group.

A total of 125 people were named and 2,800 other unnamed persons were made accused in the six cases filed with Sidhdhirganj Police Station last night, said Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station today.

Of the six cases, police filed five cases while another was filed by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) with the same police station, he said.

Different allegations, including attacking the on-duty law enforcers in an attempt to kill them, obstructing government work, setting vehicles on fire after vandalising them, loss of life and property of general people and damaging government properties, were mentioned in the cases, added the OC.

During the daylong hartal enforced by the Islamist group on Sunday, a bystander was injured when Border Guard Bangladesh men opened fire after being attacked by Hefajat activists near Sanarpar Bus Stand area in Narayanganj.

After the incident, locals threw stones and brick chips, damaging at least 10 vehicles on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway where Hefajat activists put barricades, halting traffic.

The activists blocked Dhaka-Chattogram and Dhaka-Sylhet highways by setting fire to tyres at different points including Madanganj, Shimrail, Mouchak and Sanarpar areas, disrupting traffic for four hours.
