Putting the Cart before the Horse

Addicted people in society are often treated like broken objects as opposed to “people”. What's done is that you take the addict, send them to rehab and expect them to be magically fixed. It's treated like an illness that you catch from your friends. What we often forget to consider is what leads to the needles and foils. Family problems, relationship problems, failures and a host of other things can force someone to look for an escape. The escape becomes addiction not because it's fun but because it's the only thing in the world that can stem the angry flow of depression and pent up frustration. It's not a cure that we should look for, it's peace — something that can be rarely found locked away in a remote corner of a city with doctors watching your every move. The cure is only a by-product.
