BTRC received 5,55,654 user complaints last year; 4666 pc increase from the year before

In a media briefing on Thursday, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, BTRC presented a report on the advances and achievements in the telecommunications sector from December 2019 to November 2020.

According to the report, mobile phone subscribers have increased by 28 lacs and internet subscribers increased by 1 crore 11 lacs during this time period. In the past one and a half years, 3 crores 38 lacs phones were manufactured locally in the country and a total of 12 mobile phone factories were approved to run operations.

Meanwhile, user complaints during the time period have increased by a whopping 4666% with 11,657 complaints during the 2018-19 FY and 5,55,654 complaints during the 2019-2020 FY. However, BTRC also managed to resolve 98.6 per cent of the complaints received during this time.

In the media event, newly appointed Chairman of the commission, Shyam Sunder Sikder, informed that Illegal, unregistered phones will be automatically blocked from networks starting from July 1. However, existing unregistered phones bought before July 1 will not come under this block to make the transition smoother.

To identify whether a phone is imported legally or illegally, BTRC has entered into a contract with local IT firm Synesis IT. The firm is supposed to come up with a technological platform by June 9 to implement National Equipment Identity Registrar (NEIR), a process that will help identify illegal phones from legal ones.

Currently, at least 25% of the smartphones used in the country are imported illegally, causing the government to lose out on a good sum of revenue. Once the registration process starts, fake and illegal phones and usage of stolen black-market phones will gradually reduce in the country, informed BTRC.

Smartphones legally brought from abroad, personally or as gifts, will be registered accordingly with the NEIR after a careful reviewing of the papers, informed Samiul Khan, Deputy Director of BTRC.
