BRSSS celebrate Tagore birth anniversary at public library

Promising Tagore singers entertained music lovers on the opening day (May 5) of the five-day (May 5-9) Rabindra Sangeet festival held at Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium of Central Public Library, Shahbagh in the capital.

Indrani Karmakar set off the soiree with her melodious rendition of the song “Amar Ja Achhey”. Mamun Zahid Khan next performed “Dibosho Rajani Ami Jeno Kar” followed by Tanjina Toma's melodic rendition of “Lukaley Bole Khuji” and Anabil Ehsan's presentation of “Labonye Purna Pran”.

Shemonty Monjari stood out as a performer with a baitalik song “Ami Roop-e Tomaye”. Asit Dey on esraj and Daulatur Rahman on keyboard embellished the rendition with their instrumental accompaniment.

Azizur Rahman Tuhin, Aniruddha Sengupta, Kushal Roy, Prantika Sarkar, Shimu Dey, Jannatul Ferdaus Urmi, Swati Sarkar and Ankhi Baidya also rendered solos at the event. Chief guest of the programme Poet Asad Chowdhury recited a Tagore poem “Ami” at the event.

With the theme “…Hou Mrityutoron Uttirno, Jaak, Jaak Bhengey Jaak Jaha Jirno”, Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha (BRSSS) in association with Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre has arranged the 26th National Rabindra Sangeet Festival to celebrate the 154th birth anniversary of Tagore. Deputy High Commissioner of Indian High Commission in Dhaka Sandeep Chakravorty attended the event as special guest. The organisers also honoured seasoned Tagore singer Nasreen Shams on the opening day. General secretary of BRSSS Sajed Akbar delivered the welcome address while president of the organisation Tapan Mahmud presided over the programme. 

The festival features renditions of Tagore songs, recitations of his poems and writings and dance performances every day.
