In celebration of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's 117th birth anniversary, Chhayanaut organised a two-day (May 27-28) programme at its main auditorium.

Chhayanaut artistes set off the event with a vibrant nrityageet (musical), with dancers swaying to a live performance of “Mora Jhonjhar Moto Uddam”. Eminent singer Shaheen Samad delivered the welcome address. Offering of a choral song “Joy Bani Bidyadayini” was followed.

Apart from the artistes of the leading music school, students of the Department of Music of Jagannath University rendered two choral songs, “Desh Goura-Bijoye Deboraj”, and “Rum Jhum Jhum Badal Nupur”.

Promising singers Shrabanti Dhar and Abhijit Kunda rendered solos “Amar Aponar Cheye Apon Je Jon” and “Piu Piu Boley Papia” respectively.

The highlight of the event was the vivacious presence of eminent Nazrul exponent and researcher Professor Rafiqul Islam who spoke on Nazrul Sangeet and Chhayanaut's continued efforts to nourish the genre for years. Several Nazrul Sangeet artistes performed some favourite songs of Rafiqul Islam in a segment titled “Amar Nazrul”. Prior to that, noted artiste Shaheen Samad adorned him with uttario while singer Masuda Anam Kalpona presented him bouquet.

“I am delighted to be bestowed this honour by Chhayanaut. The artistes' treatment of the melody, beat, tempo and rhythm further reminds us of Chhayanaut's sincere effort of carrying Nazrul Sangeet forward. I envisage the golden past of Nazrul Sangeet to come back with concerted efforts of devoted teachers and dedicated learners of Chhayanaut,” said Rafiqul Islam.

Young artistes of the school then performed a choral song “Shubhro Samujjol Hey Chiro Nirmol”. Nasima Shaheen, Sumon Madumdar, Nahian Durdana Suchi, Mahmudul Hasan and Shaheen Samad performed solos “E Nohe Bilash Bondhu”, “Aadho Dhoroni Alo”, “Holud Gandar Phul”, “Ami Gogon Gohon-e” and “Gul Bagichar Bulbuli Ami”.

Mahmuda Akhtar and Krishti Hefaz recited at the event while among others, noted artistes Sumon Chowdhury, Fatema Tuz Zohra, Salahuddin Ahmed and Josef Kamol Rodriguez rendered solos at the programme.

Solo and choral rendition of songs, dance and recitation marked the celebration of concluding day's event that was held yesterday at the venue.
