To mark the 40th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Sangskritik Biplobi Sangha (SABIS) arranged a cultural function at its auditorium in Manikganj town on August 29.

To mark the 40th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Sangskritik Biplobi Sangha (SABIS) arranged a cultural function at its auditorium in Manikganj town on August 29.

The programme started with a rendition of a chorus song 'Dao Sourjo, Dao Dhairja" by the singers of SABIS. Sabrina Mamtaz Momo, Nasrin Ahmed, Kajol Pal, members of SABIS, enlisted singers Khorshed Alam, Rasel Mia, Zakir Hasan Khan Jewel and child singers Abrin Shad, Badhon Sarker, Swarna Sarker  Shirin Akter, Saida Rahman, Abir Hossain Olid, Samsi Sumaya rendered solo songs while Sunil Saha and Shyamal Karmaker assisted with tabla.

Earlier a discussion was held where the speakers said Nazrul was a symbol of non-communal consciousness. This was demonstrated in his writings like 'Sobar Upore Manush Satya, Tahar Upore Nai', 'Mora Ekti Brinte Duti Khushum”. He wrote 'Hamd O Naat' and 'Shyama' with equal élan.

Rebel Poet Nazrul was patriotic and advocated for liberty. He envisioned an exploitation free country and played a role in the  anti-British movement through  his writings like “Bolo Bir Chiro Unnato Momo Sheer,” and “Karar Oi Louha Kapat”. Nazrul also promoted gender equality through his writings, and wrote for children as well.  

On Monday evening, a local cultural institute named Nazrul-Promila Institute was formed in memory of the national poet and his wife Promila Devi, at Tewta Jamindar Bari premises, birth place of Promila, under Shivalaya upazila in Manikganj.

Mozammel Haque, head teacher of Tewta Academy, presided over the discussion. A cultural function was held after the discussion.
