A solo painting exhibition titled “Life We Desire; Life We Gain” by promising artist Bitap Shavan Bachhar was inaugurated on July 22 at La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD).

Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Vice Chancellor of University of Dhaka (DU) graced the occasion as chief guest while Professor Nisar Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, DU and Professor Asim Sarkar, Provost, Jagannath Hall, DU attended the inaugural ceremony as special guests. Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Vice-President, AFD presided over the opening ceremony.

Bitap explores how individual unhappiness manifests itself in collective depression. His artworks outline how traditions impact individuals and the society as a whole.

Bitap is inclined to work on oil because of its flexibility, durability and scope for details. Almost all the artworks are life-size as the artist likes to relay the intuitive feelings of his subjects.

Born in 1985 in Satkhira, Bitap completed his BFA and MFA from DU and topped first class in both the examinations.

The exhibition will remain open till 2 August from 3 pm to 9 pm (Monday to Thursday), and 9 am to 12 noon and 5 pm to 8 pm (Fridays and Saturdays).
