Jolly's “Microtears” opens at Arts Precinct
The opening ceremony of solo exhibition of latest works by noted artist Dilara Begum Jolly was held on December 12 at The Daily Star-Bengal Arts Precinct, in The Daily Star Centre.
The ongoing show “Amorar Akkhyan (Microtears)” includes new drawings, video and sculptural installations by Jolly. The guest duo -- Professor Nisar Hossain, distinguished artist and Dean, Faculty of Fine Art of University of Dhaka; Salauddin Ahmed, eminent architect, along with Dilara Begum Jolly, the featured artist and commissioner of the exhibition, and Sadia Rahman, Deputy Director, Bengal Foundation, spoke at the inaugural ceremony.
In a striking statement from an artist who was once chiefly recognised by her brightly-hued paintings, in the exhibit Dilara Begum Jolly constructs a monochromatic universe, made up of audio-visual installations, photographic drawings and video, to which we are invited to share the artist's own, complex, emotional responses to vulnerability.
Dilara Begum Jolly studied painting and printmaking at Government Arts College, Chittagong (BFA 1981); the then Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka (MFA 1984); and Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, India (Post Dip. 1991). While still a student, Jolly first began to express her strong awareness of the many imbalances and vagaries of society, notably in an early group show by nine artists in 1983. This continually expanding and developing awareness remains a primary element of Jolly's work, which she now creates with a variety of different media.
