This year has been a good one for animated films with anthropomorphic animals: “Secret Life of Pets”, “Zootopia”, “Sing”, “Finding Dory” and the “Jungle Book” reboot. Now, the first look at “Rock Dog” is out -- the tale of a pooch on a predetermined path to becoming a guard dog when a radio literally falls into his hands, fueling the fire of his passion for music and the self-realization that he doesn't want to be a good boy; he wants to rock.

The trailer is sweet and harmless, if not necessarily dazzling. The rock-n-roll based premise leaves plenty of ground for a family film that can play for kids and adults, although they really seem to be pushing the Fleetwood Yak gag, so hopefully there's a bit more to offer.

Directed by Ash Brannon (“Toy Story 2”) from a script he co-penned with Kurt Voelker, “Rock Dog” arrives in theatres February 24, 2017 and boasts a first-rate voice cast line-up including JK Simmons, Luke Wilson, Eddie Izzard, Lewis Black, Kenan Thompson, Mae Whitman, Jorge Garcia, Matt Dillon, and Sam Elliot.
