Veteran film star Farooque once grabbed the attention of millions of cine-goers with his powerful acting. His hit Dhallywood films still remain in public memory. Today is the birthday of the National Film Award winning thespian, and in a recent chit chat, he shared his birthday plans with The Daily Star.

What are your birthday plans?

Farooque: No plans for a grand celebration as the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were brutally killed on August 15. That's why I usually avoid big celebrations. But my children, nieces and nephews celebrate the day at our home at night. They keep my room dark till zero hour to give me a birthday surprise. They have great fun but I   prefer to lie low. Like previous years, I will stay at home.

Did you have any memorable birthday celebrations in your childhood?

Farooque: I was not lucky enough to celebrate the day as my mother died when I was only eight. After my mother's demise, I did not have the heart to celebrate my birthdays. However, my aunt's affection kept me going.

What's the best birthday gift you ever received?

Farooque: I enjoy receiving flowers though I do get other special gifts. Many people wish me and I even receive anonymous calls. All this attention makes me really happy.

Who usually wishes you first on your birthday?

Farooque: My wife and then my son and daughter.

What was your best birthday celebration?

Farooque: When I became very popular in the industry, the day was celebrated with much festivity. Such birthday bashes came into my life several times. Once I was outside Dhaka for a shoot on my birthday. Somehow the villagers discovered that it was birthday and flooded me with bouquets.
