I was born in Khulna and grew up there. My first school was Khulna Fathima School where I studied till fourth grade. Later, I got admitted to Khulna Collegiate School from where I passed the SSC examinations. I was very restless as a student at Fathima School. Many memorable incidents of my schooldays still cheer me up.

Roadside food was available in front of the school those days. We eagerly waited for our break and as soon as the bell rang, we ran to have a taste of the mouthwatering foods. There used to be a popular ice-cream named Roni Ice-cream during my schooldays, which some of us used to have every day.

There was a kadam (flower) tree on the school premises. Senior students of our school plucked flowers from the tree during monsoon but I never got around to it. Every time I see a kadam flower even today, that tree comes to mind.

I also had the experience of bunking school. I had a math phobia, so I ran away, twice, at the times of my math examinations. On one incident, I went to Khulna New Market, and the other time I hid under the water tank at our home. One day, my math teacher (Tapan Sir) began teaching me the subject and it became easier for me. Interestingly, I achieved distinction marks in math in my SSC examination.

During my school days, we often picnicked. I used to cook a great 'khichuri' those days. My close school friends were Saman, Rana, Raju, Tarek, Zaman and Apu. Recently, I met Apu in Dhaka after 30 to 35 years. We became quite emotional at meeting each other.

I have a special relationship with my school friends. I'm lucky that many of my close friends live in Uttara where I live. We visit each other often.

I have vivid memories of my wonderful school days.
