Shoojit Sircar previously directed the critically acclaimed film Piku, starring Amitabh Bachchan, alongside Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan.

Ayushmann Khurrana's debut film, Vicky Donor, a major hit in 2012, was also directed by Sircar.

Gulabo Sitabo will feature Bachchan and Khurrana together for the first time. The film tells the story of two scheming men, a landlord and a tenant, who try and one-up each other in increasingly outlandish ways.
