Looking back at Monihar’s legacy on its 37th anniversary
Jashore's Monihar is one of the most popular movie theatres in the country. The place is known for releasing films simultaneously with the theatres in Dhaka. It has a long-standing legacy of its own. Today marks Monihar's 37th anniversary.
Architect Mohammad Hanif designed the hall on a land of 4 bighas. With a total of 1,400 seats, Monihar holds the record of the highest number of seats for a movie theatre in Bangladesh.
The first film to be released at Monihar was "Johnny", featuring Sohel Rana, Jashim, Sucharita and Rozina among others.
Back in the day, film stars used to visit Monihar as spectators, after the release of their films. Most recently, actors Bappy and Mahi were the last ones to visit the hall, after their respective films were released.
With "Beder Meye Jochna" and many other acclaimed films, Monihar established itself as one of the most successful movie theatres in the business. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, this iconic hall is currently facing tremendous losses, according to the owner, Ziaul Islam.
The popular 2017 film "Rajneeti" is currently running at Monihar. "We are keeping the hall open to preserve its traditions and legacy," concludes Ziaul Islam.
