Remembering Humayun Faridee with his greatest roles
Freedom fighter and National Film Awardee Humayun Faridee is considered to be one of the most beloved artistes of the country till date. He won the hearts of millions with his masterful acting and charisma on the theatre stage, television and the silver screen. The actor would have been 68 today. We look back at some of his most iconic performances, on his birth anniversary.
Faridee started his acting career on the theatre stage with Dhaka Theatre. He made a mark with his performance as Sharparaj Tokkhok in Selim Al Deen's Shakuntala, and continued his journey with plays such as Foni-Monosha (1980), Kirtonkhola (1981), Keramat Mangal (1985) and Bhut (1990), among others.
Faridee went on to earn countrywide appreciation for his television projects, debuting with Nil Nakshar Shandhaney in 1982.
He gave unforgettable performances as Seraj Talukdar in Nasiruddin Yousuff's Bhangoner Shobdo Shuni and as the notorious 'Kaan-kata Ramzan' in Shongshoptok, the hit TV series based on Shahidullah Kaiser's novel of the same name.
He was also lauded for his roles in television shows such as Pathar Shomoy (1989), Dui Bhai (1990), Shiter Pakhi (1991), Kothao Keu Nei (1992–93), Shomudrey Gangchil (1993), Pret (2005) and Kachher Manush (2006) among others.
Faridee, who worked on over 250 films, played numerous villainous roles throughout his career. Some of his notable films include Dohon (1985), Bichar Hobe (1996), Palabi Kothaye (1997), Bir Soinik (2003), Ekattorer Jishu (1993), Matritto (2005), Joyjatra (2004), and Shyamol Chhaya (2005) among others. His performances in Bachelor (2004) and Aha (2007) were widely acclaimed.
Faridee was posthumously awarded with the Ekushey Padak in 2018 for his unparalleled contribution in the field of acting. He passed away in 2012.
