San Diego Comic-Con to go virtual this year
After being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, San Diego Comic-Con announced that Comic-Con@Home, the at-home edition of the event, will take place from July 22 to 26.
Being one of the largest pop-culture events in the world, Sand Diego Comic-Con was cancelled for the first time in fifty years. While attendees were disappointed by the cancellation news, the idea of a virtual event helped to ease the disappointment.
A virtual Online Exhibit Hall with exhibitors offering the exclusives and limited-edition merchandise reserved for attendees, will be taking place. There will still be television, film, comic book and gaming panels during Comic-Con@Home, with a variety of topics, studios and publishers. The virtual edition will also feature the usual panels, although it's still unclear who will be taking part and what can be shared.
The event this year will be free for all. The switch to virtual will allow anyone with an Internet connection to check out the programme, which never would have been possible in the past. If Comic-Con@Home is a success, the organisers may consider keeping some aspects of the virtual event as a regular part of San Diego Comic-Con.
The official Comic-Con website was the first to announce the new details about this year's virtual event.
