Sourav Chowdhury’s works shine a light on thought-provoking themes
For the last 10 years, Sourav Chowdhury has been working on the important series of artworks, titled 'Eternal Existence' and 'Civilisation'. He focuses on an aura of fantasy, where mythological characters emerge in a playful mood. The artist merges the aspects of primitive cave paintings with the remnants of various world civilisations. Chowdhury is the Artistic Executive Manager of Cosmos Atelier-71 and Gallery Cosmos.
He depicts his figures and motifs from the Bengali folk art, Mughal art and elements of artifacts from the Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Harappa-Mohenjo-Daro and Mayan civilisations. The manipulation of figures and forms comes through in his canvas as a twist in the spatial overlapping with primitive cave art, with a juxtaposition of feelings and thoughts in the visuals. The passionate artist creates unique pieces, where the intricate details of lines and forms evoke a depth of euphemism.
"The instinctive similarity of human beings from the primitive era to modern times has always amazed me," says Chowdhury. "I always try to bring a lot of positive energy in my works by using bright colours and the liveliness of the figures."
The artist has four solo exhibitions to his credit. His first solo exhibition titled 'Eternal Existence' was held in Alliance Française de Dhaka in 2016. In 2017, his second, third and fourth solo exhibitions, all titled 'Eternal Existence-Circle of Dynamism' took place in the Academy of Professional Development and Retraining of Educators and Cherepovets Museum Association, Russia, the Cherepovets Museum Association, Cherepovets, Vologodaskya oblast, Russia and at Russian Ambassador's Residence in Dhaka, respectively. Chowdhury has so far participated in over 70 group art exhibitions, both at home and abroad.
For his outstanding works, he has received several awards, including national award in the 22nd National Art Exhibition, Bengal Foundation Award (Printmaking), Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Best Award for the 20th Berger Young Painters' Art Competition (BYPAC) and Kibria Young Printmakers Award. He has also participated in many national and international art camps and workshops. His artworks are in the collection of Cherepovets Museum Association, Russia, American Centre, Bangladesh, Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, Royal Thailand Embassy Dhaka, Imago Mundi, Ministry of Planning (Bangladesh), Bengal Foundation, Gallery Cosmos and many private collectors, both at home and aboard. The promising artist is currently working on a thought-provoking series, called 'Stay Home, Stay Safe', to raise awareness on the coronavirus pandemic.
