Why we keep falling for the same rom-com tropes

Why we keep falling for the same rom-com tropes

Rom-coms tell us that even in the chaos of real life, some things are beautifully predictable. The same misunderstandings, the same meet-cutes, the same last-minute airport chases somehow never get old.

Gods, graves, and gallery lighting: A love letter to looted civilizations

They say you cannot see the world in a day, but they clearly have not been to the British Museum. After five hours of exploration, I came out questioning three things: time, empire, and how exactly one steals a whole moment without anyone noticing.

Durga Puja Special

Festivities on-screen / The many faces of Durga Puja in cinema

What remains fascinating is how the aesthetics of Durga Puja on screen often mirror the aesthetics of cinema itself. Both are public spectacles designed to overwhelm the senses, to invite immersion and disbelief. A pandal is not unlike a film set, meticulously crafted, temporary, and destined to dissolve after a few days.

Movie Review / "The Ba***ds of Bollywood": All shine, no spine

"The Ba***ds of Bollywood" arrives like a party that knows it is both entertaining and dangerous to attend. It is gleefully loud, crammed with cameos and inside jokes, and built out of the familiar ingredients of commercial Hindi cinema. At the same time, it repeatedly lets loose sharp, uncomfortable flashes that refuse to be smoothed over. Watch it as a satire and you will laugh often. Watch it as an indictment and you will feel the edges. The series wants to do both things at once, and that ambition is its central thrill and also its chief flaw.

Bridgerton and its cultural impact

Reviving the Regency: 'Bridgerton' and its cultural impact

The web content arena has recently witnessed a surge in the popularity of period pieces, transporting audiences to bygone eras filled with opulent costumes, grand estates, and intricate social codes. This trend has been significantly amplified by the recent success of Netflix’s "Bridgerton", a lavish reimagining of England during its Regency era. These period dramas offer a form of escapism, allowing viewers to temporarily step away from the complexities of modern life and immerse themselves in a world governed by dissimilarly archaic rules and norms. The luxurious settings, extravagant costumes, and often dramatic storylines provide a visual feast, transporting viewers to a time perceived as simpler, albeit not without its own set of stumbling blocks.

Laapataa Ladies Review

‘Laapataa Ladies’ maximises feminism with mistaken identity

Set in the fictional Nirmal Pradesh in India, “Laapataa Ladies’” premise follows Deepak (Sparsh Srivastav), a farmer, who mistakenly ends up with Jaya (Pratibha Ranta), another bride, instead of his newlywed wife Phool (Nitanshi Goel). The film however reveals itself as more than just a case of swapped identities on a train. It is a story about defying expectations and finding freedom, wrapped in a cloak of apt humour. Since returning to the director’s seat after 13 years, Kiran Rao thus weaves a hilarious tale of these two exchanged brides. The highlight of the film lies beneath the comedic chaos in powerful messages that point to the threads of patriarchy binding women in our society.

Inspired by artists like Kandinsky, she ventured into stitched collage, a novel form of artistic expression. The inception of this exhibition can be traced back to a pivotal moment in Suranjana's life while residing in Montreal. Struck by the parallels between her own journey and that of renowned artists like Matisse, who persisted in creating despite physical limitations, she found renewed determination to pursue her craft.

‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’: Is the trending man-machine love story worth watching?

While the film boasts charming performances and a visually appealing production, it ultimately struggles to navigate its blend of romance, science fiction, and family drama. The core concept of a human falling in love with a robot is undoubtedly thought-provoking, raising questions about identity, emotions, and the future of technology. It successfully touches upon interesting themes like artificial intelligence and societal perceptions of technology. Yet, being unable to delve deeper, the film leaves certain corners unexplored and rather open to interpretation for the audience.

Dissecting the female gaze in Bollywood

For decades, Bollywood has been primarily driven by the "male gaze," where women were portrayed through the lens of male desire and societal expectations. They presented women in stereotypical roles, often as damsels in distress, sacrificing lovers, or objects of desire. This male gaze manifested in hyper-sexualisation, passive narratives and limited agency. Women rarely drove the plot. Their actions and desires revolved around men, reinforcing traditional gender roles. They were portrayed as lacking control over their lives, with their choices dictated by societal norms or male characters.

Breaking barriers: Unveiling the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs

The theme for this year’s Women’s Day, "Invest in women: Accelerate Progress," resonates deeply in today’s entrepreneurial landscape. While recent years have seen a commendable increase in the number of female-led startups, a persistent challenge remains – the funding gap. As we continue to celebrate the rise of female entrepreneurs, it is crucial to acknowledge the systemic challenges they face, particularly the fact that investors still hesitate to trust solo women founders, creating barriers to their success.
