Investment has dried up in Bangladesh’s dyeing sector, a vital cog in the textile and apparel supply chain, owing to the dragging gas shortage despite higher demand for fabrics from local garment exporters, industry people say.

Local garment exporters do not expect any substantial increase in shipments to the Western world centring upcoming Christmas sales because of high inflation and for old stocks remaining unsold in retail stores in the American and European markets, exporters said. 

Businesses have sought more time for the rationalisation of Bangladesh’s maiden tariff policy, reasoning that many industries still need more state protection to be ready to compete with their international peers.

Their visit is aimed at discussing the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) the two countries plan to ink in order to promote trade and investments. In an email interview with The Daily Star, Nobutani spoke about investment opportunities in Bangladesh for Japanese firms and challenges the face, among other issues.

It all started in early 2008 when the Japanese government announced the “China Plus One Strategy” to cut its over-reliance on the manufacturing behemoth by setting up business operations in other countries.
