Sohel Rana, 25, was a former joint convener of Chakaria municipality unit BCL, the student wing of the ruling Awami League.

According to witnesses, Sohel went to Hajipara to visit his ancestral property after hearing that the property was being grabbed.

Around 1:30am, the criminals beat up Sohel, leaving him seriously injured.

He was rushed to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Ashraf Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Chakaria Police Station, a man, Abdul Mannan, 34, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder.

"If we receive any written complaint from the victim's family, we will take legal action in this regard," the police officer added.
