A 30-year-old woman suffered serious burn injuries after her husband set her on fire in Croke area of Barguna town Thursday evening, said police.

The husband, Himu, was sent to jail yesterday after he admitted to police that he poured kerosene on Nipa Begum and set her on fire, said the law enforcers.

The victim, Nipa, was admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal with critical injuries, said KM Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Barguna Police Station.

Quoting family members, the OC said Himu, a tailor, recently married another woman without the consent of his first wife Nipa, who then filed a case with the Women and Children Repression Control Tribunal against him.

Himu often tried to force her to drop the charges against him and set her alight after failing to convince her, he added.
