1.11 lakh tonnes of rice imported from India so far

In line with the government's promise to keep the price of rice stable, the country has so far imported a total of 56,391 tonnes of rice which reached the country from India through various land ports--Bhomra, Darshana, Benapole, Sona Masjid, Hili, Burimari, Banglabanda and Sheola, as of yesterday.
Besides, 55,129 tonnes of rice has reached the country under the open tender system, a Press Information Department (PID) handout said today.
As a result, a total of 1 lakh 11 thousand 520 tonnes of rice has reached the country so far.
In an office order issued by the Ministry of Food on January 31, 2021, instructions were given to extend the deadline for opening Letters of Credit (LCs) by private companies for importing rice till February 15, 2021.
The government has reduced the import duty on rice from 62.5 percent to 25 percent at the private level to curb the rising trend of market value of food-grains, helping low-income population and keeping the market price stable.
In continuation of that, the Ministry of Food has asked the legal importers to apply to the Ministry of Food by January 10, 2021 with all necessary documents for private import of rice on December 27, 2020.
