Three people died from electrocution during the storm in Dhaka's Malibagh area this afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Sabina Pakhi (10), Jhuma (14) and Abdul Haque (65), Shariful Islam, sub-inspector of Hatirjheel Police Station, told The Daily Star.

All three lived in a rented tin-shed house behind Abul Hotel in Malibagh's Chowdhurypara, said the police official.

During today's storm, lightning hit an electric pole adjacent to the house and subsequently electrified the gate around 2pm, the SI said quoting locals.

Sabina, Jhuma and Abdul Haque were electrocuted as they were entering their house through the gate at that time, he said.

Witnesses said Jhuma was first electrocuted. Sabina and Abdul were electrocuted when they tried to save Jhuma.

Sabina was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared her dead while Jhuma and Abdul Haque died at a local hospital after being taken there, added the police official.
