Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today inaugurated 50 model mosques across the country, with hope that the mosques will help disseminate Islamic values among people.

"We've seen how some people turn to terrorism, in the name of religion. Killing people and spreading hate have tarnished the image of Islam," she said.

The prime minister said, "Everyone, including politicians, civil societies and teachers, need to work together to root out terrorism. People need to understand that no one will go to heaven by killing others."

The premier announced the inauguration of 50 mosques from Gono Bhaban through virtual platform.

The government undertook a Tk 8,722 crore project to construct 560 model mosque and Islamic cultural centres in districts, upazilas and coastal areas in 2017 with its own funding.

While talking to The Daily Star, Abdullah Al Mamun, a second year Alim student of Khulna Alia Kamil Madrasa, said the mosque constructed on Khan Jahan Ali Road in Khulna will be a centre of Islamic culture in the district.

"I am happy as we'll be able to learn Islamic values and culture. We haven't seen such government initiative earlier," he said.

Both men and women will be able to offer prayers at the four-storied mosque.
