Amid Covid-19 surge, Sujanagar municipality election being held

Election in Pabna's Sujanagar municipality began this morning amid risk of Covid-19 spread.
Sujanagar municipality election was halted three consecutive times due to legal bar, according to authorities.
Md Rawshan Ali, Sujanagar upazila nirbahi officer and also returning officer of the election, said that voting began around 8:00am and will continue till 4:00pm.
"The election is being held maintaining proper health guidelines. We have supplied hand sanitisers to the voting centres and asked the voters to wear masks," the UNO said.
The scheduled date of the election was March 31 but the Election Commission postponed it on March 29 following a writ petition filed with the High Court.
Later the High Court rejected the petition on March 31. And on April 1 the EC rescheduled the date to hold it today (April 4), UNO Rawshan Ali said.
AL nominated mayor candidate Rezaul Karim Reza, organising secretary of Sujanagar upazila unit of AL, was declared elected uncontested as mayor of Sujanagar municipality as BNP nominated candidate Kamrul Huda alias Kamal Bishwas withdrew his nomination on March 15, according to election office.
A total of 41 councilor candidates including nine for reserve seats for females in nine wards are contesting in the municipality election. A total of 20,498 voters are likely to cast votes in Sujanagar municipality.
