Cyclone Yaas: Bagerhat DC holds emergency meeting, asks to prepare 344 shelter centres

Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner ANM Faizul Haque has asked to keep 344 centres ready so that locals can take shelter as cyclone “Yaas” is expected to cross the coast of Odisha in India and coastal districts of Bangladesh by May 26.

"We have made all kinds of preparations," the DC said when he was presiding over an emergency meeting yesterday (Friday) on the preparation regarding the cyclone.

The meeting was attended by heads of various government departments of the district and representatives of local organisations, reports our Bagerhat correspondent.

The officials have been asked to provide adequate drinking water and light at the centres. They have been asked to engage the ward-level public representatives to deal with the storm.

At the meeting, the officials urged all citizens of the district to follow the instructions of the volunteers.

Besides, all government and non-government organisations including district administration, upazila administration, fire service and Red Crescent have been asked to stay ready for any emergency situation.

The deputy commissioner requested people to keep adequate amounts of dry food, matches and other necessary things.

The Disaster Management Committee and local volunteers will also work to address the issue.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat Khandaker Mohammad Rizaul Karim, Civil Surgeon KM Humayun Kabir, Morrelganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Advocate Shah-e-Alam Bachchu, Morrelganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Delwar Hossain, Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kamlesh Majumder, journalist Babul Sardar, Ali Akbar Tutul and many others addressed the meeting.
