DU unit Chhatra Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Akram remanded

Akram Hossain, General Secretary of Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad's Dhaka University unit, has been placed on a two-day remand, hours after he was arrested from Dhaka airport area today.

Akram Hossain, General Secretary of Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad's Dhaka University unit, has been placed on a two-day remand, hours after he was arrested from Dhaka airport area today.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dhiman Chandra Mondol passed the order after Investigation Officer Mohammad Saiful Islam Khan, also a Sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station, produced Akram before the court with a seven-day remand prayer in the case, court sources said.

The accused needs to be remanded to collect information about other accused in the case filed for taking an accused while undergoing treatment in police custody at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on March 25, the IO said in the police forwarding report.

Akram's lawyer submitted a petition seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayer, saying that his client was not involved in the incident.

However, upon hearing both sides, the magistrate dismissed the defence plea and placed the accused on remand in the case filed with Shahbagh Police Station.

Earlier in the day, Detective Branch of Police arrested Akram from Dhaka airport's terminal-2 area, Mahbub Alam, joint commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed to The Daily Star.

Abu Hanif, a joint secretary of the Parishad's central committee, earlier alleged that a team of men in plainclothes picked up Akram as he went to receive his bother-in-law at the airport area around 1:00am.

On March 25, a clash ensued when Bangladesh Chhatra and Jubo Adhikar Songrokkhon Parishad brought out a procession protesting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bangladesh visit from the capital's Bijoynagar area.

The demonstrators threw brick chunks when police charged batons, fired teargas shells and bullets to disperse them.

Police arrested one Abul Kalam Azad from the spot and took him to DMCH for treatment. But leaders and activists of the parishad forcibly took away Azad from the hospital that day.

Shahbagh police later the same day filed a case against 19 leaders and activists of the parishad.
