Mohammadpur fire: child dies, parents in critical condition

A two-year-old, who sustained burn injuries with his parents in a fire at Dhaka's Mohammadpur area on Saturday, died at a hospital early today.

Deceased Morsalin, 2, was the only child of Md Sohel, a day labourer, and Laboni Akter.

The child with 80 percent burns on his body breathed his last around 1:00am while being treated at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Partha Sanker Paul, resident surgeon.

Sohel, with burns on 75 percent of his body, and Laboni with 30 percent are fighting for lives at the hospital, he said.

The fire originated around 2:45am at their house at Nobodoy Housing area on Saturday.

Fire officials suspected that the fire started from a burning mosquito coil in a room where gas accumulated from a leak.
