Woman sustains severe burns in Dhaka’s Mirpur area

A woman sustained server burns in Dhaka's Mirpur area last night and was admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The injured, Mahmuda Shihabun Mubin Mou (32), used to be a TV presenter.
Her relatives alleged that her husband, Irfan Kaiyum, set her on fire but police, quoting the injured, said that she set herself on fire over domestic issues.
With 46 percent burns on her body, Mou was shifted to the high-dependency unit of the hospital.
Manjur Rahi, a sub-inspector of Mirpur Police Station, said that he talked to the injured in hospital. She said she married Kaiyum five years back, the SI said.
As Irfan, a videographer of a private TV channel, did not take her to his house in the last five years, she went in front of the house around 8:00pm last night -- demanding family recognition as his wife -- and set herself on fire, the SI said quoting Mou.
Police picked up Irfan as Mou's family alleged that he set her on fire, he said, adding, "We are investigating it."
Mou's aunt Hamila Akhter said, "We knew that Mou was in a relationship, but we are unaware that she married him."
"Irfan took her to hospital and we are suspecting he set her on fire," she alleged.
Partha Sanker Paul, resident surgeon of the institute, said her condition is critical.
