'Bangladesh achieved incredible success in agriculture'

Bangladesh has achieved incredible success in the agriculture sector, with the industry playing an important role in food production as well as ensuring sustainable food security, employment and export trade, according to Zakir Hossain, state minister for primary and mass education.

He made the comments while inaugurating an agricultural entrepreneur training programme styled "Bhorosar Notun Janala", organised by United Commercial Bank PLC at the Sheikh Russel Auditorium in Kurigram today, said a press release.

"Along with livelihood, agriculture is inextricably linked to our overall development. Therefore, the development of agriculture means the overall development of the country," the state minister said.

Appreciating the UCB's project, he said other commercial banks should also come forward to help agricultural entrepreneurs. If everyone works together, Bangladesh will move forward on the path of desired progress, he said.

Nearly 200 agri-entrepreneurs from nine upazilas of Kurigram took part in the day-long event.

Among others, ATM Tahmiduzzaman, deputy managing director and company secretary of the bank, Jishnu Roy Choudhury, former high commissioner, Rezaul Karim Siddique, an anchor of "Maati O Manush" at Bangladesh Television, and Kaziul Islam, mayor of Kurigram Municipality, Saidul Arif, district commissioner, Mohammad Mahfuzul Islam, district police superintendent, Biplab Kumar Mohant, deputy director of agricultural extension department, Md Asaduzzaman, livestock officer, and Ismat Ara, senior fisheries officer, were present.
