DSCC conducts cleanliness, mosquito eradication drive across DU, Buet, DMCH

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) today launched a large-scale cleanliness and mosquito eradication campaign across the campuses of Dhaka University (DU), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The initiative, which began at 6:00am, mobilised around 1,300 workers from DSCC's Waste Management and Health departments, alongside members of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) and campus cleaning staff.

As part of the operation, accumulated waste was cleared from drains, footpaths, and campus premises, while mosquito repellents were applied to curb the spread of dengue. A separate eviction drive was also carried out from Anandabazar intersection to the Central Shaheed Minar area to remove illegal shops and structures from footpaths adjacent to DMCH.

DSCC Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia led the drive, joined by Local Government Division Secretary Md Rezaul Maksud Jahedi and DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmad Khan. Speaking to the media, Secretary Jahedi said the government would continue joint efforts to maintain clean, orderly campuses, drawing inspiration from international university standards.

Shahjahan Mia addressed discrepancies between DSCC and DGHS dengue data, noting that many patients travel from outside Dhaka for treatment. "We will not allow profiteering or illegal business activities in front of DMCH," he said, vowing to ease congestion and improve hygiene in the area.

DU VC Prof Niaz Ahmad Khan praised the initiative as a model of collective action for public good. Senior DSCC officials, Ducsu leaders, and representatives from Buet and DMCH were also present during the campaign.
