UP chairman arrested in extortion case

A union parishad chairman in Savar was arrested on extortion charges on Monday night.

The arrestee is Saidur Rahman Sujon (45), chairman of Birulia Union Parishad and a member of Savar upazila unit of Awami League, said Saiful Islam, inspector (investigation) of Savar Model Police Station.

The arrest was made following an extortion case filed by one Ashraful Islam, who was constructing a five story building in Birulia.

As per the case statement, Sujon on Sunday demanded Tk 5 lakh from Ashraful. As he refused to pay the money, Sujon and his associates beat him. The incident took place at Savar upazila administration premises.
