The incomplete BNP Chittagong city unit committee of three members which was declared by the central committee in last August has failed to form the full team although 10 months have already passed.

Dr Shahadat Hossain was made the president, Abul Hashem Bakkar the general secretary while Abu Sufian was declared the vice-president for three years, and they were asked to form the full committee within shortest possible time, said party sources recently.

But, as they failed to do so, the central committee gave them a deadline of one month in March.

Missing the deadline, the city unit leaders are now pondering to declare the full committee immediately after Eid-ul-Fitr.

BNP leaders and activists of Chittagong city said the delay in forming the full committee was depriving many dedicated party men of the chance to become leaders. Many leaders and activists, who have been active in party programmes despite facing “repression” from the government, have become frustrated because of the delay, they added.

When contacted, Sufian said they were working step by step. Comittees for six out of 41 ward units have already been formed, he said, adding, “ We are priritising formation of  the rest ward unit committes and hoping for forming the full city unit committee after Eid-ul-Fitr.”

However, Shahadat said the main reason behind the delay was a “new problem” which arose due to amensdment of BNP's constitution.

“As per the amendment, we were instructed to form a 151-member committee instead of a 251-member committee. Now we will have to exclude 100 dedicated party men from the city committee whom we initialy thought to include”, he added. Therefore, if ward units are formed first, the 100 activists will get place there, he added.

Contacted, BNP National Standing Committee member Ameer Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the formation of full committee for Chittagong city unit was under process.
