Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maqbul Ahmad and eight other leaders of the party are detained from Uttara in Dhaka for holding a secret meeting to carry out subversive activities, police say.

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maqbul Ahmad and eight other leaders of the party were detained from Uttara in Dhaka tonight.

The party Secretary General Shafiqur Rahman and its Nayeb-e-Ameer Mia Golam Parwar (former MP of Khulna-5) were among the arrestees.

Detective branch (DB) of police detained them from a house near Labaid hospital around 9:00pm, Deputy Commissioner (North) Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star.

“They were holding a secret meeting there to carry out subversive activities,” the police official said.

The law enforcers took the Jamaat leaders to DB office on Minto Road in Dhaka around 10:15pm and started quizzing them, said Sheikh Nazmul Alam.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami announced to hold demonstrations across the country tomorrow demanding the unconditional release of the arrested party's leaders.

Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Mujibur Rahman called the demonstrations through a press release tonight.

He strongly condemned and protested the arrests of the political leaders, added the press release.
