Transport worker fleeing lockdown enforcers dies after being run over by car in Rajshahi
Fleeing a mobile court team enforcing lockdown restrictions, a transport worker was crushed to death under the wheels of a private car on the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in Rajshahi's Puthia upazila yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Latif (55) of Noakhali's Senbag upazila, said Lutfar Rahman, in-charge of Shibpur Outpost of Paba highway police.
The private car that hit Latif belongs to Mizanur Rahman, the former mayor of Tanore and member of the district unit of BNP, he said.
Latif, an expatriate who returned from Italy amid the pandemic and worked as a helper of a covered van, died on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital at 9:30pm, Lutfar said.
The accident occurred around 8:30pm when Latif was crossing the highway, our Rajshahi staff correspondent reports, quoting police and witnesses.
Police and witnesses said Latif was coming to Rajshahi in the covered-van that pulled over near a fuel station at Baneswar Bazar at 8:30pm and Latif went to a tea stall.
Police and eyewitnesses said at that time, a mobile court team was raiding the spot enforcing the lockdown restrictions.
When the team chased those who were at the tea stall, Latif ran out on the highway and was run over by the private car, they said.
