Police have arrested Brahmanbaria Ashuganj unit's Hefajat-e-Islam and Imam Parishad General Secretary Mufti Obaidullah for his alleged involvement in violence in Ashuganj during March 28's countrywide hartal enforced by Hefajat.

Obaidullah was arrested from Jamia Islamia Imdadul Uloom Madrasa in Ashuganj Bazar in the early hours of today, said Jabed Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Ashuganj Police Station, this noon.

He is the principal of the madrasa and the khatib of Bara Masjid in Ashuganj Bazar, our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports quoting the police official.

The OC also said a group of Hefajat activists led by Obaidullah blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Badsha Bari intersection of Ashuganj during the hartal day on March 28.

At that time, they vandalised and looted Ashuganj toll plaza counter, set fire to police camp adjacent to the toll plaza and attacked the upazila Awami League joint convener Abu Naser's house.

Four cases have been filed with Ashuganj Police Station over the vandalism, said the police official.

Police produced Obaidullah before Brahmanbaria court today showing him arrested in the cases, said the OC, adding that the court sent Obaidullah to jail.
