Drug addict son 'stabs mother to death' in Panchagarh

An addict son allegedly stabbed his mother to death as she was unable to give him money for drugs at Pashchim Mithapukur area in Panchagarh municipality this afternoon.

The victim, Joytun Begum (52), was rushed to the Panchagarh Sadar Hospital in a critical condition by her neighbours where the on-duty doctors declared her dead, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent quoting police.

Neighbours saw her son Shahidul Islam (35) escaping the scene soon after the incident, said police.

"Shahidul frequently asked his mother for money to buy drugs and he even stabbed and injured his father a few years ago for the same reason," Panchagarh Additional Superintendent of Police SM Shafiqul Islam told this correspondent, quoting the deceased's neighbours.

"I heard Joytun screaming and rushed to her house and saw her lying injured near the tube-well," said a neighbour Maleka Begum.

"I heard Shahidul begging his mother for money around 12:00pm today as Joytun replied she was yet to get her monthly salary. She works as a domestic help," said another neighbour Abdul Kalam Azad.

"Police is conducting a drive to arrest Shahidul while preparation is underway to file a case against him at Panchagarh Police Station," said the ASP.
