A court in Chattogram today placed Syria-trained "IT expert" of banned militant group Ansar Al Islam on a fresh three-day remand in a case filed with Khulshi police station.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mehnaz Rahman passed the order for Shakhawat Ali alias Lalu (40), who trained in Syria from Hayat Tahrir Al-Shams (HTS) in 2017, after he was produced before the court on completion of his three-day remand period.

Producing before the court, police sought five-day more of remand for further interrogation while the court granted three-day remand after hearing, said Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (CT) Ahmed Peyar of CT.

Earlier, on June 12, a Chattogram court put Shakhawat on a three-day remand after he was held in front of Central Ahle Hadith Jame Mosque of South Khushi in the city.

Shakhawat told police that he joined Ansar Al Islam with the help of his brothers-in-law Mamun and Arif in 2012. After joining, he had also met with absconding top militant Major Zia in 2013 who introduced him naming Muyaz.

According to the investigators, Shakhawat went to Turkey from Chattogram in April 2017 and then entered Syria illegally. There, he received training under HTS. He came to Bangladesh on March 22 this year from Indonesia. He used to upload audio, video and other contents related to militancy and maintained the outfit's online activities.
