A 21-year-old woman was found dead in a hotel room in Cox's Bazar yesterday afternoon

Confirming the death, Bipul Chandra Dhar, inspector (investigation) of Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said a young man along with the victim took a room of the hotel near the beach around 10:00pm on Thursday night.

In the afternoon yesterday, some hotel staffers opened the door of the room with an alternative key after getting no response from anyone inside and found the girl hanging from the ceiling fan, said the inspector.

Being informed by the hotel authorities, a police team recovered the body around 5:00pm and sent it to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.

The young man went into hiding since the incident, said the police official.

The inspector did not want to disclose the man's name for the sake of arrest and investigation.

He said the caretaker of the hotel room, Motaher Hossain, was detained for interrogation.

During primary interrogation, Motahar told police that the fugitive was his acquaintance but he did not know about the victim's death.

Police suspect that the girl was strangled to death after rape.

Amid the ongoing countrywide restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus, the district administration banned the gathering of tourists at Cox's Bazar beach from April 1 to prevent coronavirus infection.

More than 500 hotels, motels, guesthouses and cottages in the beach area remain closed due to lack of tourists, added our correspondent.
