77th Emmys to proceed under heightened security after Charlie Kirk shooting
Security for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards has been significantly tightened following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk earlier this week. The ceremony, set for September 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, was already under strict security protocols, but producers, CBS executives, Television Academy leaders, and law enforcement have instituted additional measures in response to the incident.
Authorities confirmed that the Los Angeles Police Department will expand its presence in and around the venue, supported by Homeland Security, the California Highway Patrol, and private security hired for the broadcast. "We aim to have any event in the City of LA, like the Emmys, as secure as possible and as safe as possible," an LAPD spokesperson stated.
The enhanced measures were hinted at during the Emmys red carpet rollout photo op, with organisers emphasising preparedness for both domestic and international circumstances. A law enforcement source said long-established scenario planning allowed them to scale up quickly after Kirk's killing.
Kirk, 31, was shot dead at Utah Valley University on September 10 during the launch of his "American Comeback" campus tour. Despite an active FBI-led manhunt and released surveillance footage of a suspect, no arrest has been made. His death has heightened concerns about political violence ahead of major cultural events.
The Emmys, broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+ on September 15, come amid rising political tensions and recent disruptions, including last year's pro-Gaza demonstrations that delayed arrivals. Organisers are determined to keep the ceremony safe while maintaining its celebratory spirit.
