60 rescued wild birds released at National Botanical Garden
The forest department in a drive rescued 60 wild birds from Mirpur Birds Market in Dhaka today (July 22, 2022) and later released them at the National Botanical Garden.
The birds include 32 Parakeets, 17 Shaliks, nine doves, one Myna and one Kite (Chil), said Nigar Sultana, inspector (Dhaka Divisional Office) of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation.
The birds were rescued from different cages in the market during the drive from this morning, Nigar who led the drive, told our Manikganj correspondent over the phone.
The operation was conducted in a bid to stop the illegal buying and selling of wild animals. Later, the birds were released at National Botanical Garden, Mirpur, Dhaka, she said.
During the drive, illegal wildlife traders managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of the team of forest department officials.
Nigar said from June last year till now, more than 800 wild animals have been rescued in 73 operations in bird markets of different districts of Dhaka Division.
At these drives, a total of Tk 5 lakh was fined while 16 illegal bird traders were sentenced to imprisonment in various terms, she said.
