Dolphin found dead in Halda river
A dolphin was found dead in Chattogram's Halda river today (July 20, 2022).
Locals recovered the aquatic mammal from the Azimerghat area, along the Halda river, in Raozan upazila around 2pm, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent quoting Professor Manzoorul Kibria, a researcher on the Halda river.
The dolphin is 90-inches in length, he said.
"The dolphin was found with its rostrum cut, but the cause of its death is not known yet," he said, adding that the mammal has been buried.
The Halda river is an important habitat of the endangered freshwater Ganges river dolphins (Platanista Gangetica). The dolphins are an integral part of the area's ecosystem, to the point that their conservation can benefit a wider range of aquatic and threatened species, including turtles, gharials, and otters.
