An elephant died after being hit by another elephant at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.

The incident occurred on December 22 last year at the elephant shed inside the park, Chief Conservator of Forests Amir Hossain Chowdhury said this morning.

A three-member committee has been formed after the autopsy of the elephant, Amir said.

"The elephant was 47-48 years old. On December 22, another elephant hit and threw it on the pillar at the park's elephant shed. It died shortly after being seriously injured. Meanwhile, the autopsy of the elephant has been completed. The committee has been asked to submit its report within seven working days," he added.

The cause of the elephant's death will be confirmed after receiving the autopsy report, he added.

There were total of nine elephants at the safari park -- seven males and two females. The dead elephant was a female one, Amir further said.

Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park, was called several times for his comments over the matter but he did not answer.

Mohammad Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station, said the park authorities filed a general diary (GD) in connection with the death of the elephant at the safari park.
