An elephant was shot dead in Chakaria Upazila of Coxs's Bazar yesterday morning.
Anwar Hossain Sarkar, divisional forest officer of Cox's Bazar North, told The Daily Star that they found the elephant lying unconscious in Khesahola area of Khutakhali Union of Khutakhaki area in the morning.
The elephant aged 27 was shot in the head, the forest official said. Through efforts from a veterinary surgeon and forest officials, the mammal died of bleeding.
Locals alleged that a mango orchard owner shot the animal.
An FIR has been filed with Chakaria Police Station, said the forest official.
