Clearing of sacrificial animal waste in Dhaka city begins
Workers from two city corporations in Dhaka have started work to remove the waste of animal sacrifices on the occasion of Eid-ul Azha within the designated timeframe.
The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) announced a 24-hour schedule, while the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) announced an eight-hour schedule for waste disposal.
Despite the rain, around 19,000 sanitation workers from the two city corporations are working to meet the target.
Muslims performing animal sacrifices have disregarded the rain and carried out the ritual in the capital since morning. After 1:00pm, the two mayors inaugurated the waste disposal programme, and the sanitation workers began their tasks.
DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said, "We have completed all preparations for waste removal. Inshallah, we will successfully dispose of all the waste within the specified timeframe. Just like our previous achievement, this time too we will be able to provide benefits to the people of Dhaka ahead of schedule."
DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said, "The speed at which we can remove the waste depends on the local residents. We have distributed biodegradable polythene bags to everyone. I kindly request everyone to dispose of their garbage in the designated areas. We have approximately 11,000 employees ready for this task."
Sources said the DSCC has arranged 357 different types of machinery for waste disposal, including 10 pay-loaders, four backhoe-loaders, nine skid loaders, seven tire dozers, three chain dozers, 96 dump trucks, 53 compactors, and nine water tankers. Additionally, an adequate number of handcarts, shovels, knives, hooks, and other necessary equipment and supplies have been provided.
Besides, six excavators, four chain dozers, two tire dozers, and one pay-loader have been deployed for waste disposal in DNCC areas.
Furthermore, leaves for relevant personnel in both city corporations have been cancelled to ensure the smooth operation of waste disposal. Approximately 9,000 workers from the DSCC and 10,000 workers from the DNCC are actively involved in the disposal of sacrificial animal waste.
Hundred percent waste of sacrificial animals has been removed from wards 15 wards of the DSCC by 5:45pm, said DSCC Spokesperson Abu Naser.
By 4:30 pm, 100 percent waste removal of 13 wards of DNCC was completed, Makbul Hussain, the city corporation's public relations officer.
The wards are 6, 7, 10, 11, 17, 19, 24, 28, 32, 39, 46, 52 and 54.
DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam visited different wards and inspected the waste management activities.
CONTROL ROOMS SET UP
DSCC and DNCC have set up control rooms at Nagar Bhaban to ensure effective monitoring and information related to waste removal.
